Getting Involved

Come join the Mentor Movement!

Mentoring a child can be the most rewarding experience of your life. With a small investment of time each week, you can make a BIG difference in the life of a child.

No special skills are needed, just your kindness, dedication, and support, and your willingness to spend time with someone who needs you.

Selecting a Mentor Program

There are different types of mentoring programs, and selecting a mentoring program that meets your criteria is equally as important as your decision to become a mentor.

We have included some common Steps to Getting Involved (see next section) that may help you.

CMF works with over 350 mentoring programs throughout the state of California. We invite you to enter your zip code in the box below to find a mentoring program that meets your interests near you!

Steps to Getting Involved

Researching and selecting a mentor program you’re comfortable with and
excited about can take some time and energy. Try not to get discouraged – there are a lot of different mentoring opportunities available, and it is important you find a program and opportunity that best fits what you’re looking for. Once you select the best program for you, the time and energy you put into the initial research will definitely make your experience more worthwhile.

The steps below may help you through the selection process.

Step 1
Decide what type of mentoring program you would like to be a part of. Ask yourself specific questions such as:
  • What age group would you like to work with?
  • Do you want a mentor program with a specific program focus? (i.e.:after school tutoring, rehabilitation, foster care, gang prevention, alcohol and drug abuse, physical abuse, etc.) What kind of time commitment
  • would you like to give?
  • What type of mentoring you would like to do? (i.e.:one on one mentoring, group mentoring, family mentoring, tutoring,
  • counseling, etc.)

Step 2
Click here to enter your zip code to search the Mentor Programs CMF works with in your area that fit your interests, preferences, and needs.

Step 3
Contact the programs you’re interested in, and talk to the program director/staff to get your questions answered. Ask questions about the programs application process. If the program has a website, explore their website to find out more information. Don't be discouraged if a program doesn't match your needs or if you don't match their immediate needs, instead ask for a referral or refer back to “Get Involved” and search another program in the database.

Step 4
Complete the application process with the program you’ve selected, participate in any specified training, and enjoy the wonderful, rewarding benefits of being a mentor!!
